Not everyone agrees on the nature and origin of this 48km long chain of limestone shoals connecting India to Sri Lanka.
It certainly brings along a wealth of stories: for the Hindu epic, it is Rāma’s bridge, the remnant of a huge causeway constructed by Rāma to facilitate the passage of his army from India to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) for the rescue of his abducted wife, Sītā; for the Muslims it’s the path followed by Adam, fallen on earth, to Adam’s Peak, Ceylon, atop which he stood repentant on one foot for 1,000 years.
Geologic history combined with sea level variations and storms tell us it used to be a land foot-passable connection between India and Sri Lanka till a few centuries ago,but no dredging efforts have succeeded in cutting a passage for large vessel navigation to reach India’s eastern coast without circumnavigating Sri Lanka.
