A bleeding gem (IR)

Connecting and dividing

Construction of the 15 km Shahid Kalantari causeway – connecting the cities of Aq Gonbad and Urmia on the eastern and western sides of the lake – is one of many factors impacting on the saltwater lake, once the second largest in the Middle East.

It caused the disconnection of the lake’s northern and southern parts, modifying the hydrodynamics of a lake that after nearly three decades of drought and high water demands has shrunk by 80%.

An environmental disaster that is now being faced, with apparent initial success, by new safeguarding measures, with the hope of turning stained blood-red waters – from algae and bacteria that flourish due to extreme saltiness – back to their initial colour, reason for the nickname of the turquoise solitaire of Azerbaijan.
