Looks like lake Erie is the perfect theatre for battles.
Back in 1812 the Battle of Lake Erie was one of the biggest naval battles, the United States Navy defeated the British Royal Navy. This ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war, which in turn allowed the Americans to recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the native Indian confederation of Tecumseh.
Nowadays, different battles take place in the lake. One is against the huge Harmful Algal Blooms – generated by a combination of fertilisers run-off and high temperatures – making water toxic and unusable. Another one is against abnormally high water levels – due to various factors including melting from last winter’s snow pack across the Great Lakes basin – that may drive heavy waves and threats of shoreline erosion and flooding in the next months.
